Osamu Tezuka’s Phoenix manga makes an anime comeback with the premiere of Studio 4°C’s Phoenix: Eden17 production, which is now streaming on Disney Plus. Out of all the stories in the Phoenix series, what does Phoenix: Eden17 cover in the manga?
The Phoenix manga is one of Osamu Tezuka’s masterpieces that is still celebrated by readers.
It is a collection of stories that depict different aspects of human life, such as rebirth, death, reincarnation, and even immortality.
Spoiler Warning: There are spoilers for Phoenix: Eden17 ahead!
What Does Phoenix: Eden17 Cover in the Manga?
The Phoenix: Eden17 anime covers the sixth volume of the Phoenix manga, entitled Nostalgia.
But bear in mind that Studio 4°C’s anime adaptation has to cut a lot of scenes and change some plot elements to retell the story of Romy (Romi) on planet Eden17.
Unlike the manga, Phoenix: Eden17 is more toned down when it comes to sexual content, mature themes, and so on.
Similar to the other volumes in the manga series, the legendary Phoenix remains a symbol of hope in the anime.
But this time, it watches over Romi and her destiny in Eden17, as she tries to create a thriving society on an uninhabitable planet.
In the first episode of Phoenix: Eden17 (Cain), Romi and George land on Eden17 after they escape from Earth.
They decided to start life anew on the planet in the hopes that someday Eden17 would have the same thriving society as Earth.
Things turned sour after an accident that changed Romi’s life forever. But the good thing is that Romi gave birth to Cain.
To protect Cain, Romi had to sleep for 13 years to continue her mission on Eden17, but a machine error caused her to sleep for 1300 years instead!
The same thing happened in the Phoenix manga, except Romi and George sought the services of a real estate agent to buy Eden17.
Romi also gave birth to Cain, but instead of sleeping for 1300 years, she slept and woke at the perfect time to couple with her son.
From here on, the events in the anime have been adjusted, as other characters like Seth and his siblings were omitted. The hermaphrodite alien called Norva is also missing in the anime.
Nonetheless, the Phoenix: Eden17 anime covers the entirety of Nostalgia, from the first time Romi lands on Eden17 to her final moments on the planet. It’s just that the endings in both mediums are different.
How Many Episodes Does Phoenix: Eden17 Have?
The Phoenix: Eden17 anime has a total of 4 episodes, each with a runtime of 24 minutes.
Here are the four episodes of Phoenix: Eden17:
- Episode 1: Cain tells the story of Romi and George in Eden17. After an accident hits the couple, Romi is left to fend for herself with her son, Cain. But as days pass, Romi realizes that she needs to be there for Cain in the future to continue their goal of creating a thriving society in Eden17.
- Episode 2: Moopy tells the story of Com, half-Earthling, half-Moopy, who will do anything for Queen Romi just to fulfill her wish of going back to Earth. With Com’s abilities, they embark on a space adventure in a stone ark to see Earth once again.
- Episode 3: Astronaut tells the story of a ferry pilot named Makimura, who joined Romi and Com’s space adventures. He also decided to help Romi and Com go back to Earth, despite his initial objections.
- Episode 4: Romi shows the completion of Romi and Com’s space adventures, as they were able to go back to Earth just to find Heaven Island.
Will Phoenix: Eden17 Have More Episodes?
Unfortunately, there won’t be any new episodes for Phoenix: Eden17, as the story of Romi has already been completed in just four episodes.
But there will be an upcoming film entitled Phoenix: Reminiscence of Flower that will retell Romi’s destiny.
The film will have a different ending from Phoenix: Eden17, so make sure to look out for it when it arrives.
On the other hand, there’s a possibility that this will not be the last anime series for Osamu Tezuka’s Phoenix manga.
Perhaps Studio 4°C will also pick up the other volumes of the manga and adapt them into anime sometime in the future!
