Despite facing limitations from her 2023 frontotemporal dementia (FTD) diagnosis, a recent documentary reveals a surprising detail: Wendy Williams isn't ready to throw in the towel yet.
The beloved media personality may also be struggling with alcoholism.
Wendy was Sent to Restrictive Ward After Allegedly Getting Drunk
The hour-long special called TRAPPED: What is Happening to Wendy Williams? premiered on Monday, May 19, on the ID channel. The documentary deep dives into Wendy's life under a guardianship.
The former talk show host currently resides on the third floor of a New York City assisted living facility, but according to investigative journalist Diane Dimond, Wendy has been transferred elsewhere.
"Wendy was on the third floor in this care unit, where she had access to the hallways, to the elevators," Dimond alleged in the report, "And on her birthday, she decided to get in the elevator and see where she could go."
Apparently, the 60-year-old TV Queen went way up to the rooftop bar on her birthday, where she ordered tons of drinks. Though how many drinks she ordered was undisclosed, "Who knows how many, but she will admit to you that she got drunk, she had a relapse."
Dimond continued to say that because of this incident, Wendy will be sent to a "much more restrictive ward" and claimed that the memory care unit is located on the fifth floor.
There, Wendy would have a "room with a bathroom and a television, and she is locked into that floor 24/7 unless the guardian gives her permission."
What Happened to Wendy Williams?
The Wendy Williams show host had been placed under a guardianship in 2022 and was diagnosed with primary progressive aphasia and FTD the following year.
In a previous interview on The View, Wendy had already addressed alcoholism claims, admitting that she "celebrated" her 60th birthday in July 2024, but insisted she was now sober.
"[My] relationship [with substances] is fine and is wonderful," she said, "I've had my devices and I have to tell you something: I am easily going on with my life, alcohol-free."
Several doctors previously weighed in on Wendy potentially having alcohol-induced dementia, rather than FTD, which brain disorder specialist Daniel Amen said in TRAPPED.
"Alcohol is one of the main causes of cognitive decline and dementia," Amen explained, "In fact, I believe that alcoholic dementia is the second most common cause."
Wendy had previously spoken out about her conservatorship and health issues, which her current guardian, Sabrina Morrissey, acknowledges and requested that she receive a "new medical evaluation" that will reflect "comprehensive neurological and psychological testing by a specialist in the field."
According to the February 5 filing, qualified experts should investigate further on her health condition rather than have "tabloids, radio, or the Internet" spread "careless speculation."
It remains to be seen whether Williams has been misdiagnosed, but it's worth noting that none of her reps has spoken up about this yet. We would have to wait for further confirmation on her health status.
