The Dark Knight from 2008 has got to be one of the most beloved comic book movies of all time, but a new film called The Dark Knight is set to release starring Lone Ranger star Armie Hammer—primed for a comeback after getting cancelled back in 2021.
With everyone obviously associating the title with the hit Batman film, everyone was expecting WB Pictures to react in some way… and they did.
There Can Only be One Dark Knight
Talking during a recent episode of his podcast (via World of Reel), director Uwe Boll revealed that WB did contact him to change the title of his Armie Hammer movie, to which he refused. Boll explained:
“DC and Warner already contacted and said I can’t use the title. I understand that but I told them ‘Guys, remember Rampage, the Rock movie? You used my title.’ The fact that they did that, and called me for permission, they could show gratefulness and say, listen it’s not a Batman movie and you can use the title.”
For some added context, Boll had a movie released back in 2009 called Rampage, and WB had released a movie in 2018 with the same name starring Dwayne Johnson. It’s not clear what the ins and outs are of the situation, but Boll will probably say that WB Pictures kind of hit him first when they made Rampage, despite The Dark Knight (2008) being a way more popular film.
What’s The Dark Knight about?
When it comes to this new Dark Knight movie, the film is said to be about a man "who takes justice into his own hands as he sets out to hunt down criminals. While his crusade transforms him into a social media sensation and a hero in the eyes of the public, the local police chief sees him as a menace to society and aims to take him down."
While the premise pretty much sounds like a watered down Batman, it does seem like it’s going to be its own different vigilante story. Plus with Boll at the helm, it’s likely that it’s going to be a way more violent flick, as compared to Batman who has his no-kill rule (which the movies are lax about once in a while).
For now, The Dark Knight is still undergoing production, so it’s probably going to be a while before audiences get a first look. At this rate, depending on how VFX-extensive the movie is, it’s possible it could release later in the year or sometime early next year.
Armie Hammer Cancelled
While Armie Hammer had been a solid Hollywood presence a few years back, in 2021, he was hit with several allegations of sexual misconduct and cannibalistic threats by multiple women. There was apparently a lengthy investigation held by the LAPD, but they ultimately didn’t press any charges.
Now Hammer is set to make his comeback, and people are just waiting to see what happens. So far, it does seem that Hammer is pretty happy with his status. In a recent podcast interview (via CBM) he says, “My dance card’s getting pretty full… That first job that I turned down after four years of this shit, I mean, it was the best feeling I’ve ever had.”
The Dark Knight starring Armie Hammer still has no official release date.
