Viola Davis recently defended her decision to star in the upcoming action film G20, a departure from her usual dramatic roles.

The EGOT winner is considered to be one of the greatest actresses today, thanks to her acclaimed dramatic performances in film, TV, and stage. She has received four Oscar nominations in her career so far, with one win.

In the last few years, Davis has started embracing projects that are outside her comfort zone, as she has also starred in DC movies as Amanda Waller and franchise titles such as The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes.

Viola Davis Explains Why She's Doing Action Movies

In a recent interview, Davis explained why she decided to star in an action movie like G20, and not just focus on starring in dramatic films.

She explained that she is not only chasing projects that will get Oscar recognition, but she is also open to doing movies that are appealing to the general audience.

"I don’t think every movie you do has to be considered for an Academy Award. I wanted to do something that families could watch together, something popular," the EGOT winner said. "But internally you’re always trying to get back to the fun."

When she received an offer to star in G20, it was a no-brainer for Davis to say yes. "Hell yeah! I needed some levity in my life," she said.

Davis added, "The only two people you owe anything to are your six-year-old self and your 80-year-old self."

What is Viola Davis' G20 About?

G20 is a new action thriller that is set to premiere on Prime Video this April 10. Patricia Riggen directed the film.

The logline reads: "When the G20 summit comes under siege, U.S. President Danielle Sutton (Davis) becomes the number one target. After evading capture by the attackers, she must outsmart the enemy to protect her family, defend her country, and safeguard world leaders in this action-packed thrill ride."

Aside from Davis (who also serves as producer), the cast also includes Anthony Anderson, Marsai Martin, Ramón Rodríguez, Douglas Hodge, Elizabeth Marvel, Sabrina Impacciatore, Christopher Farrar, and Antony Starr.
