Get Out made a whole lot of waves last year. Jordan Peele's directorial debut was celebrated for its strong socio-politcal commentary. Starting out as a story of a black visiting his white girlfriend's family for the very first time, Get Out ends up being a terrifying film as the lead character discovers the family's plans of implanting the minds of aging white individuals into the bodies of black victims.
This year, Peele released Us, another horror movie featuring black lead characters. Peele's seems to have a trend of putting the spotlight on black leads, something which he doesn't see himself breaking from anytime soon.
Speaking in a panel about Us (via The Hollywood Reporter), Peele tells his fans that he just doesn't seem himself casting any "white dude" as the lead of any of his future films.
"Not that I don't like white dudes," Peele told fans during the panel, "But I've seen that movie. It really is one of the best, greatest pieces of this story, is feeling like we are in this time — a renaissance has happened and proved the myths about representation in the industry are false."
Audiences have long since proven this Renaissance. Get Out raked in $255 million at the global box office – a major win considering that the film only cost $5 million to make.
There's been a stronger call for diversity and representation in the entertainment industry today. Films like Wonder Woman, Black Panther, Get Out, and Us, have all influenced the progressive movement, showing Hollywood that viewers want to see films where women and people of color take the lead.
Us is currently screening in cinemas.
