A new report revealed that Gene Hackman and his wife Betsy Arakawa's bodies remain unclaimed more than a month after they were discovered.
For the past few weeks, we've been hearing updates on the passing of the screen icon based on new autopsy reports that explained his cause of death as well as the details of his will.
Gene Hackman and Betsy Arakawa's Bodies Remain Unclaimed
TMZ reported that the bodies of Hackman and Arakawa are still unclaimed more than a month after their death.
The Office of the Medical Investigator in New Mexico confirmed the information, as it has a list of unclaimed decedents on its website.
It remains unknown why the bodies have not been claimed, but the officials have clarified that it's not unusual for bodies to be unclaimed a month after death.
There is a possibility that Hackman and Arakawa's family are still finalizing the funeral arrangements for the couple.
The news comes as it was revealed in a recent report that Hackman's children were left out of the late actor's $80 million will. However, since autopsy reports revealed that Arakawa died first, they could inherit the estate instead.
Gene Hackman and Betsy Arakawa's Cause of Death
It was announced by New Mexico authorities that autopsy reports from medical examiners have ruled Hackman and Arakawa's deaths to be from natural causes.
Arakawa died first from hantavirus in their New Mexico home, while Hackman passed away a week later due to heart disease.
Hackman also had severe signs of advanced Alzheimer’s disease, so he was likely not aware that his wife had already died during his final days. His pacemaker last showed signs of activity on February 18, around a week before their bodies were discovered.
Meanwhile, their dog Zinna died due to dehydration and starvation, according to a report obtained from the veterinary lab. The stomach was mostly empty except for small amounts of hair and bile.
