The long-awaited Tim Burton sequel Beetlejuice Beetlejuice has yet to get toppled off the box office ranks, even by the likes of Transformers One which showed a lot of promise prior to its release.
Beetlejuice Beetlejuice is Still on a Roll Beating Transformers at the Box Office
Despite Transformers One garnering 89% positive reviews on Rotten Tomatoes and an indication of strong audience scores, it would seem the animation prequel is not even close to beating Beetlejuice Beetlejuice over its hot spot on top.
"This is a lukewarm opening for an animation adaptation in a live-action series," David A. Gross of movie consulting firm Franchise Entertainment Research recently said.
"Industry expectations are high for a big series like this, but an animation adaptation is not going to hold all or even most its live-action audience," Gross adds, "It's too big a shift."
Keep in mind that while Transformers One had a reported budget of $75 million, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice had one condition before premiering in merely exclusive theaters: that the musical sequel could only debut on the big screens if they dropped its budget from $147 million down to $100 million.
As of writing, Optimus Prime and Megatron's prequel has only brought in $14 million internationally with a worldwide total of $39 million, despite targeting a start of $30 to $40 million, while Beetlejuice Beetlejuice brought in $225 million domestically and $329.7 million globally.
Budget may be everything when it comes to producing high-end films, however, fans should also remind themselves that Transformers One only graced the screens on September 20, which means there could be more chances to pull up their box office records on time.
After all, it is the franchise's first theatrical animated film since its 1986 The Transformers: The Movie, which turned out to be a box office disappointment at the time.
Transformers One is an origin story of Optimus Prime and Megatron directed by Toy Story 4 helmer Josh Cooley.
With a lead cast voiced by Chris Hemsworth, Brian Tyree Henry, and Scarlet Johansson, the prequel shows how the enemies we know today used to be closer than brothers prior to changing the fate of Cybertron.
