Top Gun: Maverick was a massive success when it was released in theaters back in 2022 and it ended up becoming the second-highest-grossing film of that year. It was also the first Tom Cruise movie that crossed the billion-dollar box office mark.
The sequel became a major player during the awards season as it earned six Oscar nominations including Best Picture and took home a trophy in the Best Sound category.
Since the film's successful release, fans have been wondering whether it will get a third movie and hopefully become a massive hit again.
Now, almost two years since the sequel's release, we finally have an official word regarding Maverick's potential return.

Top Gun 3 In Development with Tom Cruise and Co-Stars Slated to Return
According to Puck, a third Top Gun movie is currently in development at Paramount Pictures with Maverick co-writer Ehren Kruger returning to pen the screenplay.
The report from The Hollywood Reporter also confirmed that Joseph Kosinski is returning to direct the potential third installment. Cruise, Miles Teller, and Glen Powell are expected to come back as well.
This news comes as Cruise recently signed a non-exclusive deal to star and produce movies for Warner Bros., but it was noted that this project has been in development since late fall of last year.
Considering the huge success of the sequel, it is inevitable that a third movie will be in development and it makes a lot of sense that Cruise is involved again in the project since he is the biggest draw of the franchise.
However, it also poses a question of whether they will be able to replicate the same success of the sequel even with the same director, writer, producers, and cast involved since it might be hard to replicate.
In the end, it all comes down to whether they will be able to come up with a good story that justifies a third installment and has the same thrill and entertainment that the sequel has that propelled it to become a billion-dollar hit.
