I swear to the gods that until Those Snow White Notes came along; I did not know that shamisen could sound that awesome.
In the first episode of this sweet shoujo romance, we meet a young man named Setsu who loves to play the shamisen. After the death of his grandfather, however, Setsu loses his sound and identity. Running away to Tokyo, Setsu gets attacked one night in Roppongi but is saved by a hostess named Yuna who is trying to find herself as well while also trying to become an actress while supporting her aspiring musician boyfriend, Taketo. Over the course of the first episode, these two attempt to find themselves but instead find solace in each other, even if it's only briefly.

Having read the first manga volume that this series is adapting, I knew going in that I was going to love this premiere and I was right. Delivering on everything that the original source material did (plus more!), this series was a visual and aural delight!
If you have never heard a professional playing the shamisen before, you are in for a major treat when you watch this episode and listen to Setsu as he plays on the riverbank and in front of the concert audience. Both of these performances are nothing short of amazing and will blow away anyone with even a passing interest in traditional Japanese music.
What has me really excited, however, is knowing what's coming next. At the close of episode 1, we meet Setsu's mother as she makes a very grand entrance in Tokyo and if you thought that was overdone, you're in for a whole world of you ain't seen nothing yet!
Those Snow White Notes is off to an absolutely stellar beginning and I can't wait to see where it goes once it gets beyond the material from the first volume. I have a soft spot in my heart for well-done music anime and this is already proving to be a well-done, lovingly crafted series. Trust me when I say that you'll want to jump on the bandwagon early with this one.
