The Weapons universe is expanding as director Zach Cregger confirmed that he is working on a prequel movie centering on fan-favorite villain Aunt Gladys.

The horror sensation became one of the surprise box office successes of the year, grossing more than $250 million worldwide and receiving widespread acclaim from critics. Speaking recently with Fangoria, Cregger confirmed that he is working on a Weapons film that will focus on the origins of Aunt Gladys.

"It is real, and I’ve been talking to Warner Bros. about it. There’s a story, and I’m pretty excited about it. It’s not bulls***," he revealed.

The director also shared that he had been considering the idea of doing an Aunt Gladys prequel movie before the film's release and massive box office success.

"I was ready. I had it kind of in my pocket before the movie came out," he said.

However, the Aunt Gladys prequel movie might take some time to come to fruition, as Cregger is currently preparing for the Resident Evil movie reboot.

"It is obedient to the lore of the games, it’s just a different story. I’m not going to tell Leon’s story, because Leon’s story is told in the games," he teased. "I am the biggest worshiper of the games, so I’m telling a story that is a love letter to the games and follows the rules of the games."

What is Weapons About?

The film's logline reads: "When all but one child from the same class mysteriously vanish on the same night at exactly the same time, a community is left questioning who or what is behind their disappearance."

The cast includes Josh Brolin, Julia Garner, Alden Ehrenreich, Benedict Wong, Cary Christopher, Austin Abrams, June Diane Raphael, and Madigan. Cregger wrote and directed the film.

The original release date was set for January next year, but after receiving enthusiastic test screening scores, it was moved to August of this year. It ended up being the surprise hit of the summer season.
