The Super Mario Bros. Movie Sets Impressive Box Office Record for Illumination

Ever since its release in theaters on Easter weekend last month, The Super Mario Bros. Movie has been breaking a lot of box office records and it ended up becoming the highest-grossing film so far this year.

While the film was expected to be a huge hit given the popularity of the Mario property, it is still surprising to see that it was able to break a lot of box office records even if it's already more than a month since its premiere and the summer season has opened where more movies are opening.

Now, it looks like the film broke another record as Variety reported that The Super Mario Bros. Movie grossed another $13.3 million on its sixth weekend and it now has a total gross of more than $1.21 billion worldwide.

As a result, the film is now the fourth highest-grossing animated film of all time and it is now also the highest-grossing film produced by Illumination as it surpassed the total box office numbers of the 2015 movie Minions.

This is certainly a piece of exciting news for the filmmakers behind the hit movie since it solidifies its huge success once again and it is also proof that the Mario property is still as popular as it was during its peak. You can even argue that it may have reached its apex mountain again through this film.

It would be interesting to see whether the film will be able to break more records in the coming weeks, especially since it is closer to becoming one of the top three highest-grossing animated movies of all time.

The film's synopsis reads: "While working underground to fix a water main, Brooklyn plumbers Mario and brother Luigi are transported down a mysterious pipe and wander into a magical new world. But when the brothers are separated, Mario embarks on an epic quest to find Luigi."

"With the assistance of a Mushroom Kingdom resident Toad and some training from the strong-willed ruler of the Mushroom Kingdom, Princess Peach, Mario taps into his own power."
