The Super Mario Bros. Movie Nabs Another Major Box Office Record

The Super Mario Bros. Movie has been a huge hit at the box office ever since its release last week and the audience has also been loving the film as proven by the exceptional audience scores and ratings that it's been receiving.

There is no doubt at this point that the Illumination/Nintendo film will be one of the biggest animated movies in history that'll likely warrant a sequel.

Box office analysts have been predicting that the film will now hit the billion-dollar mark in just a few weeks and it is also most likely going to be one of the top five highest-grossing films by the end of the year, which is rare to happen for a non-Disney animated movie.

Now, it looks like those predictions are getting closer to reality as a recent box office report from Deadline revealed that The Super Mario Bros. Movie has now grossed more than $500 million and it is now officially the highest-grossing film so far this year.

The Illumination/Nintendo film has accumulated $508.7 million worldwide as of this day. Given that the movie is not yet out in certain countries in Asia including Japan, it is expected to earn more box office numbers in the next few weeks and likely surpass Minions: The Rise of Gru's $942.5 million gross.

The film is now also officially the highest-grossing video game film adaptation of all time as it surpassed the numbers of Warcraft and Pokemon: Detective Pikachu. In addition, the film is so far the tenth biggest animated film ever worldwide, and its ranking is expected to rise soon.

This is certainly an impressive achievement for the film since it just shows that the audience worldwide was able to show up in theaters and embrace it as there is a likelihood that the repeat viewings propelled it into the kind of numbers that it received.

It is now interesting to see whether it is indeed going to join the billion-dollar club in the coming weeks and perhaps even become one of the all-time biggest animated movies in history (if not the number one).
