The Super Mario Bros. Movie has become the highest-grossing film so far this year thanks to the numerous box office records that it broke ever since its release last Easter weekend and now it is one of the top grossers in animation.

Considering that Disney films usually dominate the animation box office charts, it is certainly impressive that the Illumination/Nintendo production was able to achieve the record and it also helps that the film is based on a global IP that has been beloved for decades.

Now, as it is concluding its theatrical run, the film nabbed another impressive box office record that propels it even closer to the top spot.

According to Collider, The Super Mario Bros. Movie is now the second highest-grossing film of all time beating the first Frozen film on the record as it now nabbed $1.288 billion on its worldwide gross.

As a result, the Illumination/Nintendo film now trails Frozen II in the chart although it might struggle on taking over the Disney sequel's position as it grossed $1.45 billion and the difference between the two is too significant at this point.

However, there is still one record that the film could still break which is the highest-grossing animated movie of all time at the domestic box office. Incredibles 2 currently has the record with a $608 million haul while The Super Mario Bros. Movie currently has $560 million.

Considering that the film is already available on VOD and numerous tentpole movies have been released in theaters in the past few weeks, it is certainly impressive that they were able to nab another record at this point of its theatrical run.

The question now is whether it will be able to get to the top spot. The odds right now are low since there is still an almost $200 million difference between this and Frozen II. The film will also release on home video soon which means that it won't be able to accumulate a lot of gross in the next few weeks.

For now, let's wait and see how it will fare well on the rest of its theatrical run as more animated films are also getting released in the next few weeks.
