As The Summer I Turned Pretty is coming to an end with its third season, fans couldn't help but wonder if we'll ever get to see Skye again. After its season 2 debut, will the character come back for a second time? Here's what we know.
Who is Skye in Jenny Han's Novels? Why Did Fans Hate Them in Season 2?
Skye (who is portrayed by Elsie Fisher) is the cousin of brothers Conrad and Jeremiah in The Summer I Turned Pretty.
Skye made their debut in the series in Season 2, Episode 3, titled "Love Sick," where they first appeared on the show as a non-binary character and preferred the pronouns "they/them."
Upon Skye's appearance, so did their mother, Julia (played by Kyra Sedgwick), who is determined to put the family beach house up for sale.
In turn, Belly, Conrad, and Jeremiah devised a plan to grow closer to Skye and change Julia's mind.

Despite the majority of the characters existing in Jenny Han's original novels, you'd be surprised to learn that Skye was only created for the show.
As the show's first non-binary representation, Jenny Han couldn't be more thrilled to include them and expand the inclusive community. This, however, did not sit right with fans.
"The character seems so unnecessary and misplaced. It is honestly hard for me to watch," one fan said, "The actor is beyond awkward in the role, and it throws off the original group's dynamic."
"Yeahhhh, I feel like the writers wanted to throw someone in to be 'relatable' to Gen Z," another chimed in, "Skye is literally the epitome of what misled boomers think Gen Z is lol."
But most importantly, Skye's representation didn't appear genuine for the show's dynamic, with fans calling them "written totally wrong" and "stereotypical," which didn't bring "anything good to the series."
Did Skye Return in The Summer I Turned Pretty Season 3?

Since Skye's mother, Julia, won't be returning for The Summer I Turned Pretty season 3, and both have finished their business in season 2, it's safe to say they won't be returning to the show.
Unless they make a special appearance or flashback episode, maybe.
Considering that Skye is practically a minor character and a distant cousin at that, it's only natural to assume that their appearance would only matter if they could somehow help the main characters resolve their conflicts.
Not to mention, Sedgwick's answer to their potential return in June 2024, "I'm not in season 3. No, no, no. Spoiler alert."
Other side characters who won't be returning to the show include Cam Cameron (David Iacono) and Shayla (Minnie Mills).
