Sleeping Dogs fans, rejoice! The cult-favorite video may finally hit the big screen after Shang-Chi star Simu Liu reveals its film adaptation’s script is “done.”

Back in January, the Canadian actor confirmed he was working with the rights holders to bring the United Front Games’ magnus opus to theaters. Now, it looks like it will soon happen.

Will there be Sleeping Dogs Movie?

Just when fans thought the Sleeping Dogs movie would never happen, Liu finally gave an exciting update on the much-awaited film adaptation of the 2012 action-adventure game.

Several months after his last update, the 36-year-old star shared a post on X—fittingly alongside his sleeping dog.

“In honour of our sleeping dogs script draft being done, here’s my sleepy dog,” he tweeted.

Along with the photo of his pet, Liu also included the cover page of the film’s script. Though the writer’s name was edited out, the date “10/3/2025” was visible.

In the comments section, known movie insider MyTimeToShineHello expressed curiosity about how Liu managed to work things out with Square Enix, the publisher of the original game.

“They’re absolutely great it’s the studios that don’t seem to understand how important this IP is BUT we will get them there,” the MCU star said.

Earlier this year, Liu revealed that only a few of pitched film projects had been greenlit, admitting that getting approval for Sleeping Dogs had been “tiring” because some executives didn’t actually “understand the game.”

Still, that didn’t stop him from pushing the project forward.

“Everyone’s overwhelming love of Sleeping Dogs here has really given us life!” he tweeted.

And by the looks of it, Liu’s work with the franchise might not end with the movie—a game sequel could be next.

“First a movie, then a sequel game for everyone… that’s always been the dream,” he added.

Sleeping Dogs

Developed by United Front Games for Square Enix, Sleeping Dogs is set in contemporary Hong Kong and follows Asian-American police officer and martial artist Wei Shen, who goes undercover to infiltrate a Triad organization.

The title features an open-world environment where players can engage in both legal and criminal activities.

Asian actor and director Donnie Yen was the first to pitch a movie adaptation of the game in 2017, with plans for him to star in the lead role.

Production was expected to begin in 2022, but unfortunately, it never came to fruition. Yen later confirmed in January that his planned adaptation would no longer move forward.

However, in Liu’s recent post, he shared that his first call would be to Yen if he ever manages to bring the Sleeping Dogs movie to life. His second call, he added, would be to Will Yun Lee, who originally voiced Wei Shen in the game.

As for the third? Liu joked that it would be to DoorDash to find him “the nearest restaurant that serves pork buns.”

So far, there’s still no word on the production timeline or release date for Liu’s version of Sleeping Dogs.
