Sir Michael Caine is coming out of retirement to star in the sequel to The Last Witch Hunter with Vin Diesel.

The 92-year-old legendary actor hasn't acted on screen in the last few years. He originally announced his retirement back in 2023 during the release of his supposed last movie, The Great Escaper. However, as it turns out, fans will be seeing him again on the big screen soon.

Variety reported that Caine is making his return to acting as he is being eyed to star in the sequel to The Last Witch Hunter.

No final deal has been made yet, but he will be reprising the role of Dolan, a priest who assists Diesel’s warrior Kaulder as he fights to stop a plague propagated by a witch queen.

The development of the project is currently being fast-tracked by Lionsgate and Diesel’s production company One Race Films.

It will mark the end of Caine's retirement from acting. However, it remains unknown whether his return will be a one-off or if he will be open to starring in other projects if more opportunity arises.

Back in 2023, Caine explained why he decided to retire from acting at that time.

"I’ve figured, I’ve had a picture where I’ve played the lead and it’s got incredible reviews," he said to BBC Radio.

"The only parts I’m likely to get now are old men, 90-year-old men, maybe 85. And I thought, ‘Well, I might as well leave with all this — I’ve got wonderful reviews. What have I got to do to beat this?'"

Why is The Last Witch Hunter Getting a Sequel?

While The Last Witch Hunter was panned by critics when it was released in 2015, it ultimately became a hit on home video and streaming platforms.

It surprisingly became one of the most-watched movies on Netflix, leading Diesel to decide to develop a sequel to the film, which had been his passion project.

"The Last Witch Hunter has grown since its theatrical release into a global fan favorite, with audiences continuing to discover and rewatch it across every platform over the past decade. That enduring enthusiasm made clear there is an appetite for more stories set in this world,” said Lionsgate Motion Picture Group chair Adam Fogelson in a statement.

"Vin and I have partnered many times over the years, and he is a true force in our industry. I’m thrilled to be reuniting with him as he returns to this iconic role, and excited by how advancements in filmmaking technology now allow us to economically deliver a sequel on an even more ambitious scale."
