As we're closing the year and the holiday season is upon us, the month of December is expected to have a jam-packed theatrical attendance as a lot of people will be going to their favorite movie theaters and watch some of the highly anticipated new releases ranging from the third installment of a billion-dollar franchise or a new movie from the world of a popular animated series.
Here is our list of the most anticipated new movies to help guide your moviegoing plans in December 2025.
Five Nights at Freddy's 2 - December 5
In Five Nights at Freddy's 2, one year has passed since the supernatural nightmare at Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza. The stories about what transpired there have been twisted into a campy local legend, inspiring the town’s first-ever Fazfest. Former security guard Mike and police officer Vanessa have kept the truth from Mike’s 11-year-old sister, Abby, concerning the fate of her animatronic friends.
However, when Abby sneaks out to reconnect with Freddy, Bonnie, Chica, and Foxy, it sets into motion a terrifying series of events, revealing dark secrets about the true origin of Freddy’s and unleashing a long-forgotten horror hidden away for decades.
Despite being released simultaneously on Peacock, the first film was a massive success when it was released in 2023, prompting the greenlight on the sequel. It would be curious to see whether this new installment will manage to be a box office hit once again.
Ella McCay - December 12
Ella McCay follows an idealistic young woman who juggles her family and work life in a comedy about the people you love and how to survive them.
This marks Oscar-winning filmmaker James L. Brooks' comeback film after 15 years of absence. While the month will be full of tentpoles and genre movies, Ella McCay will provide a different flavor among the slate, and perhaps a light-hearted film might be something you need to see on the big screen.
Avatar: Fire and Ash - December 19
Avatar: Fire and Ash follows Jake and Neytiri's family as they grapple with grief after Neteyam's death. They encounter a new, aggressive Na'vi tribe, the Ash People, who are led by the fiery Varang, as the conflict on Pandora escalates and a new moral focus emerges.
The third installment in James Cameron's billion-dollar franchise will expand the world of Pandora once again with the introduction of a new Na'vi tribe and more epic adventures surrounding the main family. This is expected to be a billion-dollar grosser again, which will give audiences another new, breathtaking theatrical experience like no other.
The SpongeBob Movie: Search for SquarePants - December 19
The SpongeBob Movie: Search for SquarePants follows SpongeBob SquarePants as he journeys to the ocean's depths to face the Flying Dutchman's ghost, encountering challenges and uncovering marine mysteries.
SpongeBob SquarePants continues to be one of the biggest animated franchises in the world as it continues to be popular across many generations, and audiences have not shown to being tired of the world of Bikini Bottom. Mark Hamill will voice the Flying Dutchman.
The Housemaid - December 19
Based on the best-selling novel by Freida McFadden, The Housemaid follows a struggling woman who is happy to start over as a housemaid for an affluent, elite couple.
With the novel's popularity and Sydney Sweeney and Amanda Seyfried leading the cast, this is expected to be a major hit among the female demographic. It is also full of twists and turns that are worthy of seeing unfold on the biggest screen possible.
Anaconda - December 25
A meta-reboot of the 1997 film, Anaconda follows a group of friends who are going through a midlife crisis. They decide to remake a favorite movie from their youth, but encounter unexpected events when they enter the jungle.
With Jack Black and Paul Rudd starring, there is some interest from audiences in seeing what this unique reboot of the '90s classic looks like. With the lack of horror offerings in this season, this could be the closest the audiences could get if they're in the mood to watch this kind of genre.
Marty Supreme - December 25
Josh Safdie's Marty Supreme follows Marty Mauser, a young man with a dream no one respects, who goes to hell and back in pursuit of greatness.
This is already hailed by critics as one of the best films this year, based on early screenings in the last few months. Timothee Chalamet is also seen as the frontrunner for Best Actor at the Oscars, as he delivered a powerful performance that solidified him as this generation's best actor.
