The Matrix franchise is getting a massive revival over 20 years after the original film came out and longtime fans of the legendary film series are beyond ecstatic to see Neo and Trinity back together to pick up where they left off and continue their journey. However, the fourth film titled The Matrix Resurrections apparently almost didn't happen with director Lana Wachowski having inhibitions about continuing its production.
According to one of the film's stars Jessica Henwick who plays Bugs in the highly-anticipated sequel, the entire production delay caused by the COVID-19 pandemic decreased the morale behind the scenes and it most certainly affected Wachowski's self-esteem.
In an interview with Collider, the Iron Fist star revealed that Wachowski almost walked out of the project and it took some convincing from the cast and crew to change her mind about stepping down as director. She shared: "When we were shut down for COVID and we went off three months, I think it was, I still was at home training every day, even though we didn't know if we were going back."
Henwick added: "When we got shut down for COVID, Lana said, 'Well, maybe that's it. Maybe we won't come back and film the rest of it. Maybe the new Matrix will go down as this legendary film which [is] incomplete, and no one will ever be able to see it. Maybe that's what this is meant to be.'"
"And we were all going, 'No, you have to finish the film.' But she really did toy with the idea of just calling it quits. I don't know if I'm meant to be talking about that."

Thankfully, cooler heads prevailed in the end and Wachowski didn't let the situation get the best of her resulting in them being able to finish production when the COVID filming restrictions were eventually lifted. Now, we're just a month away from the fourth film's release and I'm already calling it now, The Matrix Resurrections is going to be a monumental event for the film industry.
The Matrix Resurrections hits cinemas and HBO Max this December 22nd.
