The Little Mermaid Director Teases Possible Live-Action Sequels

There is little doubt that The Little Mermaid is expected to be another huge hit for Disney. But will the live-action remake lead to possible sequels or prequels? Director Rob Marshall has opened up about the possibility of more films in the future.

Rob Marshall recently spoke to Total Film magazine where he discussed the possibility of a sequel to the live-action The Little Mermaid movie (via GamesRadar). The director pointed out that the original animated classic spawned several new projects and it only makes sense for the prequel to get its own.

"I know there have been the prequels and sequels to the animated film – like, the straight-to-video kind of things, you know? It’s a classic story that has a lot of characters and a lot of interesting stories," Marshall said.

"I do think it’s right for certain things. But you have to see how a movie plays, and how it does… I think there’s always an opportunity to find stories within stories. That’s always a wonderful thing," he said.

We already know that the animated classic had a sequel The Little Mermaid II: Return to the Sea which followed Ariel's daughter Melody. In addition to that, the prequel The Little Mermaid: Ariel's Beginning was released in 2008.

For now, it has not yet been confirmed whether The Little Mermaid will get a sequel or a prequel. However, there is little doubt that the live-action remake's success will lead to more films in the future. Stay tuned for more updates on this story.

The Little Mermaid will star Halle Bailey as Ariel, Jonah Hauer-King as Prince Eric, Daveed Diggs as Sebastian, Awkwafina as Scuttle, Jacob Tremblay as Flounder, Noma Dumezweni as Prince Eric's mother Queen Selina, Javier Bardem as Ariel's father King Triton, and Melissa McCarthy as Ursula. The film is scheduled for theatrical release on May 26, 2023.
