Star Wars: The Last Jedi may have been nothing short of a critical and commercial success, however, the film has managed to gather a group of vocal detractors who hate the film for its attempts at subverting fan expectations and for turning Jedi Master Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) into a jaded old hermit.
However, while this minority would rather not see another Star Wars film from The Last Jedi's director Lucasfilm has decided to give Rian Johnson his own trilogy, one that the filmmaker is still planning to work on after his current project, Knives Out.
Johnson just recently attended this year's CinemaCon to debut footage from his upcoming mystery crime film, Knives Out, and during his panel at the event, the director let everyone know that the film would be his only project before "going back to a galaxy far, far away."
Though this might sound a bit disappointing to those who don't appreciate The Last Jedi, to Johnson's fans this is definitely great news. Say what you must about Johnson's Star Wars entry, but not only did The Last Jedi introduce new creatures and new elements into the franchise, it also added depth to our knowledge about the Force.
This ability to take the Star Wars franchise to new directions is one of the main reasons why Lucasfilm hired Johnson in the first place, and now the studio is ready to continue moving with Johnson at the head of a new trilogy.
Lucasfilm's next Star Wars entry, Star Wars: Episode IX, premieres December 20, 2019.
