Demon hunter John Constantine may have been popularly known for being portrayed by Keanu Reeves in the 2005 film Constantine, but there’s no denying that Matt Ryan’s take on the character has become a beloved fixture among fans of the supernatural antihero.
Debuting in 2014 in the NBC series of the same name, followed by his appearances in the animated City of Demons and the CW’s Legends of Tomorrow, the Welsh actor delivered a perfect portrayal of Hellblazer.
So, after Ryan’s last appearance as Constantine in the final season of Legends of Tomorrow, will fans see him as the occult detective again?
Will Matt Ryan Return as Constantine?
After just one season, NBC canceled Constantine in 2015, reportedly due to poor ratings and high production costs.
But despite the low viewership numbers, the series developed a dedicated fanbase and received positive reviews, thanks to its good writing and strong performances—particularly from Ryan.
In fact, his version of the character is considered the “best in live-action” for being comic book-accurate in both looks and personality, compared to Reeves’, whose portrayal felt like an original character since his movie was released before the series.
However, though Reeves is already set to return in DC’s Constantine 2, which is reportedly in early development, there’s little chance Ryan will be seen as Constantine again.
Sure, he was part of the Legends of Tomorrow crew, but The CW is now under new management and has canceled all the Arrowverse shows.
The network has already shifted its focus away from these types of series, making Constantine a far-fetched dream.
Also, while Warner Bros. Discovery is rebooting the DC Universe, it seems to show little interest in revisiting previous incarnations of the characters, including Constantine.
So, though it’s hard to admit, there may be no chance that Ryan will headline his own Constantine live-action series again
Where Fans Can See Matt Ryan Again?
In addition to Constantine, another character that Ryan is famous for is Edward Kenway from Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag.
Though it has been 12 years since the game was released, there have been longstanding claims that a remake is in the works.
In fact, the rumors surrounding the Black Flag remake have reached a fever pitch after Ryan teased a possible return to the golden age of piracy at a fan event.
In a video posted on TikTok by @therebelarchive, Ryan was seen signing a box of an Assassin’s Creed Funko Pop and talking to a fan.
“Have you beaten the game?” the actor asked, to which the fan said he did but awhile ago.
From there, the Constantine star dropped a major tease that no one expected.
“Well, you might have to beat it again,” he added with a coy smile.
The excited fan couldn’t help but ask if what Ryan was saying was true, assuring him he would run through of the games again.
“Well, especially this one,” Ryan continued, referring to Black Flag. “There’s a reason I say that, but I can’t say anything.”
As expected, the reveal sent fans into a frenzy, fueling speculation that a remake is in the works.
Though Ubisoft remains mum about it, Ryan’s words seem enough to suggest that a Black Flag remaster is coming.
So, if fans can’t see Ryan as Constantine again, they may hear him as Edward soon.
