Following the massive global success of Squid Game, director and writer Hwang Dong-hyuk is now working on a new TV series titled The Dealer that will serve as his follow-up project.
Since the series ended last year, fans have been wondering what's next for Hwang and whether his next project will manage to take the world by storm with another high-stakes storytelling and unique concept. Now, we finally have the details on what to expect in his next project, and it looks like it will be another promising venture from him.
What is the Plot of The Dealer?
According to Tudum, The Dealer is a crime drama series that follows Geonhwa, a brilliant casino dealer whose wedding plans suddenly fall apart, forcing her to unleash her long-hidden powers and plunge into the dangerous world of gambling to make it down the aisle successfully.
As the main character, Geonhwa is an exceptionally adept and seasoned dealer who has lived a life far removed from the vices of the casino floor. She finds her life upended when a housing scam derails her newlywed plans. Forced into the underworld she’s avoided, she unleashes the full extent of her powers to the test.
Choi Young-hwan is helming the episode, marking his directorial debut after working as a cinematographer for many years. Ohnooy and Lee Tae-young wrote the scripts.
Hwang Dong-hyuk will only serve as a producer, but he is helping shepherd the project. Will he be able to turn it into another global hit like Squid Game? Only time will tell.
Who is Starring in The Dealer?
Jung So-min (Love Reset) will be playing the lead character of Geonhwa. Ryoo Seung-bum is co-starring as Hwang Chisu, a gambling addict who survives with whatever cash he can scrounge at casinos and joins Geonhwa’s dangerous plan.
Also starring are Lee Soo-hyuk (S Line), who is playing Jo Jun, the casino player who turns the tables. Armed with razor-sharp skills and an impenetrable poker face, Jun dominates the casino tables, raising the tension at every turn.
Meanwhile, Ryu Kyung-soo (The Bequeathed) is playing the key role of Choi Wooseung, a detective and Geonhwa’s fiancé. Gentle and affectionate with Geonhwa, Wooseung shows a very different side at work: someone who is relentless and never lets a suspect slip away.
When is The Dealer Coming Out?
So far, no release date has been set for The Dealer. However, production has already started, so there is a possibility that it will likely be released on Netflix next year.
For now, we should wait for more news and updates regarding the series in the coming months. All we can hope is that it will be on the same bar as Squid Game.
