The original main cast of The Avengers reunited for the Lakota language dub of the iconic MCU film.
Twelve years ago, The Avengers arrived in theaters and it instantly became a box office smash that led the MCU to new heights as it was the first film in the franchise to earn the billion-dollar mark.
It is now also considered to be a superhero movie classic and changed the genre forever as its success paved the way for the dominance of the MCU for the rest of the decade.
The Avengers Cast Reunites for the Lakota Dub
The original Avengers cast reunited for the Lakota language dub of The Avengers which was recently released on Disney+.
A behind-the-scenes video was also unveiled which showed Robert Downey Jr., Mark Ruffalo, Chris Evans, and Scarlett Johansson rerecording their lines in Lakota.
The project took over 15 months and involved 62 Lakota-Dakota language speakers, as well as the original Avengers cast.
The dub was done as part of The Lakota Project's effort to help reintroduce and promote the Lakota language. Ruffalo was heavily involved in the process and took charge of recruiting his Avengers co-stars for the project.
"Just getting everyone together on the same page was probably the most difficult thing," Ruffalo explained in the behind-the-scenes video.
"But everyone really was into it. It’s a daunting language: There are sounds that we just don’t have in our language that they have in theirs. But once you start to get there, it feels really good."
Lakota dub executive producer Ray Taken Alive said of the project: "You have the most famous film franchise in the world and some of the most famous actors, celebrities, and characters speaking our Lakota language that was once banned. So, a really beautiful thing from the project is that our language doesn’t have to hide anymore."
This is an amazing effort for Marvel Studios and The Lakota Project team since they are using The Avengers to give the spotlight to the native language in a major way and make it more accessible to the community.
It remains to be seen whether more MCU films will also be dubbed in the Lakota language, but this could pave the way for more potential projects like this in the future.
