  • Quick Answer: Jason Momoa plays the live-action antihero Lobo in DC's upcoming Supergirl movie, but insists any future solo film must be strictly R-rated.

The Main Man is officially crashing James Gunn's DCU. Before he can even think about riding his space hog into a solo project, Jason Momoa is set to make his highly anticipated debut as the cigar-chomping, intergalactic bounty hunter in director Craig Gillespie's Supergirl. Here's what Momoa said about Lobo's DCU future.

While out promoting his highly anticipated DCU entrance during the Supergirl press tour, Momoa gets candid about what it would take to get him to headline a standalone feature for the Czarnian bounty hunter.

In a recent interview with ComicBook.com, the A Minecraft Movie star confirmed Lobo's future, but it would take more time to build than they did with Aquaman.

"I have asked. And they do have some plans," Momoa told the outlet, "If I'm allowed to release anything, I would just probably say that much. Aquaman, you know, came out with a little splash of him in Batman v. Superman, Justice League was pretty big, and then Aquaman. So I think it'll be a slow release."

"We'll see where he fits, and then it would be amazing to do our own solo [movie]," he continued, "But the audience really has to, like, love him and want to be there."

If there's anything Momoa wants accomplished for Lobo's live-action solo film, it's to give the bounty hunter what he's best known for: "It has to be [R-rated], but you've also got to build the fan base for that. You can't just drop that in there and expect everybody to come in. You've got to watch it. You've got to warm them up. I don't want to say anything yet."

What Fans Can Expect From His Lobo in the Upcoming Supergirl Movie

Before fans can get a solo movie, Lobo has to make his introductory splash. Momoa confirmed that DC Studios chief James Gunn has a long-term, slow-release trajectory mapped out for the antihero, drawing a parallel to how Aquaman was subtly introduced in Batman v. Superman before carrying his own multi-billion-dollar franchise.

For his big-screen debut in Supergirl, fans can expect a short but sweet introduction. Early reports indicate that the character will occupy about 15% of the movie's total runtime, acting as a chaotic and unpredictable force on an interstellar journey alongside Milly Alcock's Kara Zor-El.

Since Supergirl itself is a PG-13 tentpole, Momoa's dialogue and signature interstellar violence will be slightly reined in to accommodate the broader theatrical release.

However, the actor promises his performance captures the pure, unfiltered essence of the character he has dreamed of playing for over a decade. If audiences turn up and love this first taste of the intergalactic biker, an R-rated standalone project might just be the next destination on DC's release slate.

For now, fans can watch Lobo make his DCU debut in Supergirl, which is slated to premiere on June 26, 2026.
