It looks like it really is the age of diversity and representation. Hollywood used to believe that having female leads in blockbuster movies didn't make for good box office returns, but times are changing and a recent study finds that the top female-led films inthe past few years are earning more on average than films with men as their lead stars.
According to The New York Times, a study by the Creative Artists Agency and by tech company shift 7 has discovered that top films with female leads have been out-earning movies led by males within the years 2014 to 2017.
Using a Nielsen-owned data company called Gracenote, CAA and shift7 looked at 350 different films, 105 of which were led by women and 245 of which were led by men. Breaking down the results of the analysis by the budget size to level the comparisons, the study discovered that with the exception of movies in the $30 million to $50 million budget level, women-led moves earned more than their male counterparts in terms of average haul and median take.
The study also found that films that passed the Bechdel test (a test where two or more female characters talk together about something other than a man) also did much better than those that didn't pass the exam.
Right now, another major female-led comic book movie, Captain Marvel is set to premiere early next year and we're pretty sure that the film is going to bring in a whole lot of money for Marvel at the box office too.
