Original Gremlins star Zach Galligan recently provided an exciting update on the long-awaited third movie and how the project rests on Steven Spielberg's shoulders.
Earlier this year, it was announced that Warner Bros. has been developing Gremlins 3 with Amblin Entertainment and writer Chris Columbus involved. Fans of the franchise have been looking for updates on the projects and wondering when it will finally begin production, especially with the current trend of legacy sequels in Hollywood.
Is Gremlins 3 Still Happening?

During his recent appearance at Comic-Con Manchester (via Games Radar), Galligan confirmed that Warner Bros. is "incredibly interested" in making Gremlins 3 happen, and a script is being worked on.
However, the project needs to have approval from Steven Spielberg, who produced the original films, for it to move forward.
"After 35 years, they’ve come up with a script. Warner Bros. is incredibly interested in doing it, apparently it’s waiting on Mr. Spielberg to read it and approve it. But you can thank the success of Beetlejuice Beetlejuice," the actor said.
Galligan didn't share more details on the plot and whether director Joe Dante, who helmed the first two films, is set to return to the director's chair for the third installment.
So far, neither Warner Bros. nor Spielberg has commented on Gilligan's recent remarks regarding the update on the third installment.
What to Expect in Gremlins 3
So far, no director or writer has been attached to Gremlins 3, since the project is still in early development, and no release date has been set.
While Gilligan is seemingly interested in reprising his role again in the third installment, the development of the third film poses a question of whether Phoebe Cates, who has retired from acting, is open to reprising her role as well.
For the past decade, there have been multiple attempts by Warner Bros. to do either a third movie or a reboot of the Gremlins franchise. With the legacy sequel trend persisting, it wouldn't be surprising if this version of the project moves forward soon.
An animated spinoff series is also currently streaming on HBO Max as part of their expansion of the franchise.
