Star Wars: The Last Jedi Director Rian Johnson Still Defends Characterization Of Luke Skywalker

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker has finally made its premiere, and while most fans are busy going through the different elements of the movie, they've also been reminded of Star Wars: The Last Jedi.

There's been a lot of renewed discussion on the approach that was taken in the film and there have been a lot of comparisons to The Rise of Skywalker.

Taking to Twitter, The Last Jedi haters have come out of the woodwork again to tear down the version of Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) that was presented in the film, and the film's director, Rian Johnson, has decided to respond to the seething fanbase again.

A Star Wars fan just recently decided to share a breakdown of Luke Skywalker's characterization in The Last Jedi, saying that he/she's found the best-written explanation of how Johnson destroyed Luke's character and supposedly "derailed the franchise."

Without blocking the fan or resorting to ad hominem attacks, Johnson responded to the tweet by objectively defending his characterization of Luke.

"I understand that point of view but I completely disagree with it. In fact, I think it disrespects the character of Luke by treating him not as a true mythic hero overcoming recurring wounds & flaws, but as a video game character who has achieved a binary, permanent power-up," the director wrote on his post.

The alleged "misuse" of Luke's character has been one of The Last Jedi haters' most prominent point of contention with the movie, and it seems like fans still don't agree with how Johnson sees the character. It's such a shame though, because the Jedi Master seemed very human in The Last Jedi, and seeing him rise above his doubts and his fear so that he could save the Resistance on Crait made Luke seem like a true hero in every sense of the word.

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker is currently screening in cinemas.
