Lucasfilm's Star Wars franchise might be one of the biggest and most popular science fiction franchises in Hollywood history, but that doesn't exempt the galaxy far, far away from plot holes and gaps in narratives. Thanks to Marvel Comics, fans finally have the answers to various issues with the franchise, the most recent of which includes Leia, Luke and Han's promotion in the Rebel Alliance before the events of Star Wars: Episode V- The Empire Strikes Back.
Taking place after Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope, Marvel Comics' Star Wars #55 shows the Empire giving the Rebel Alliance a surprise attack. Deactivating a number of the internal commands of the Rebellion's ships, the Empire leaves the organization in an extremely precarious position. With no way to communicate and utilize their necessary defensive measures, Luke, Leia, and Han have to get to work to discover ways to reactivate the ships to give the Alliance a chance to escape.
Succeeding in their mission, Mon Mothma recognized the efforts of the group, promoting them to the positions we see them in the Empire Strikes Back.

Here, Leia becomes a general of the Rebellion, Luke becomes a commander, and Han a colonel.
Initially, before Star Wars #55, fans assumed that the three received their promotions in Episode V because of their efforts in A New Hope where Luke took down the Death Star and Han and Leia helped in the fight.
However, as it turns out, the three actually had more responsibilities and the promotions they received weren't just because of the heroics of Episode IV.
Star Wars #55 is available for purchase today.
