By now, everybody knows what Squid Game is and how massive it has become. But what is Squid Game: The Challenge? This upcoming reality show on Netflix is bound to be the hottest series when it comes out.
If this is the first time you're learning about this show, we know you've got questions, particularly about the show's plot. In this guide, you'll learn more about the show and what it's all about.
What is Squid Game: The Challenge About?
Squid Game: The Challenge is a spin-off show of the hit 2021 Kdrama, Squid Game. The big spin here is that it is a reality series with contestants vying for a shot at winning $4.56 million. This is also recognized as the largest single cash prize in reality TV.
If you watched the Kdrama before, you'll know that the show picked up a bunch of desperate men and women who were in dire need of some cash. They were then forced to play childhood games with a deadly spin to them.
Fortunately, Squid Game: The Challenge does not take things that far. Netflix has simply taken the concept of the Kdrama and turned it into a real competition with a shot at a life-changing jackpot prize.
Netflix's VP of Unscripted and Documentary Series, Brandon Reigg, said in an interview:
“Squid Game took the world by storm with [director Hwang Dong-hyuk’s] captivating story and iconic imagery. We’re grateful for his support as we turn the fictional world into reality in this massive competition and social experiment. Fans of the drama series are in for a fascinating and unpredictable journey as our 456 real-world contestants navigate the biggest competition series ever, full of tension and twists, with the biggest-ever cash prize at the end.”
How Many Contestants are There in Squid Game: The Challenge?
There are a total of 456 contestants in Squid Game: The Challenge. While no one actually dies in this reality competition, we can expect some betrayal from the contestants.
In the teaser, one contestant said:
"I'm going to be your best friend, but I will absolutely double cross you."
Another contestant was quoted saying:
"People’s true colors are starting to come out.”
With a jackpot prize that much, it's definitely going to be a tough journey to make friends with the other contestants. After all, only one will get to walk away with that much cash.
Some of the confirmed contestants on Squid Game: The Challenge include Lee Taylor, Michael Van Wijk, Marcus Harrington, and Theresa Sherron.
But what happens when they don't pass a challenge? As mentioned, they don't actually get killed off by the guards. Instead, an ink pack will explode on their chests, simulating a gunshot wound.
