Long-time Saturday Night Live cast member Kenan Thompson recently weighed in on the controversy surrounding Morgan Wallen's abrupt exit in the recent episode.
The country singer sparked backlash online for immediately walking off the stage right after guest host Mikey Madison said goodbye in the episode and bucking a well-known tradition.
Kenan Thompson Addresses Morgan Wallen's SNL Controversy
In a recent interview, Thompson addressed Wallen's controversial walk-off from the Saturday Night Live stage and shared that he was as puzzled as fans were about his abrupt exit.
"I don't know what goes through people's minds when they decide to do stuff like that. I don't know if he understood the assignment or not, or if he was really feeling a certain kind of way," he said.
"You see somebody before you get a chance to say hi or say good job or anything like that, they just dipping. I thought maybe he had to go to the potty or something."
Thompson added, "It's definitely a spike in the norm. We're so used to everybody just turning around and high-fiving us, everybody's saying, 'Good job, good job, good job.' So when there's a departure from that, it's like, hmm, I wonder what that's about?"
The long-time Saturday Night Live cast member also revealed that he didn't interact with Wallen during the production of the episode.
"Seems like a complicated individual, I guess. Prince did the same thing. I'm not saying Morgan Wallen is Prince, but we weren't surprised because Prince was notoriously kind of standoffish. It's just how he was. So we just thought like, 'Okay, now he's gone back into fantasyland,'" Thompson said.
"But Saturday I guess it was just different because it just felt so abrupt. And it was already such a small grouping on the stage anyway. So it was just like, oh wow, that was pretty visible. You know what I'm saying? It was a pretty visible thing."
Why Did Morgan Wallen Abruptly Exit the SNL Stage?
Wallen's abrupt exit from Saturday Night Live has baffled fans since the episode aired.
What added to the confusion is when he posted a photo of his private jet on his Instagram story with the caption, "Get me to God's country."
According to a report from Variety, sources close to Wallen have told them that there is no tension between the country singer and the show. They maintained that he had a "good time" and had no slight intention of abruptly leaving the stage.
It was also the way he entered and exited the studio all week during rehearsal and camera blocking, and he wasn’t thinking about being on-camera when he strolled off stage.
