Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse Animation Technique Being Patented By Sony

Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse isn't just a cinematic treat, it's also a visual delight, challenging what movie-goers thought of animated movies. Considered one of the best Spider-Man movies of all time, Into the Spider-Verse has been praised for its creativity and its wild animation style.

Now, according to a new report by Deadline, Sony Pictures Animation is trying to patent Into the Spider-Verse's unique concoction of animation styles. For those who don't know already, the film plays with a mix of CG images and hand-drawn art, making the sequences pop up on the big screen.

Of course, it's only right for Sony Pictures Animation to patent the style. The studio's initial patent requests claim that the tools used to create the film's hybrid animation style come from a "distinctly new invention," and considering the awe from the animators in the industry, it isn't a surprise to see Sony trying to make sure they have the full rights to the style.

Speaking in an interview with ComicBook.com, Into the Spider-Verse producer Chris Miller opened up about how ambitious the movie was, and how so much work was put into the production of the film.

"This is a situation where the movie was so ambitious, it was trying to do so many groundbreaking things in its visual style, in its storytelling style, in its cinematic style." Miller explained in his interview with the publication. "Everything about it ... The sound mix was probably going to be groundbreaking, so it required a lot of work. Every version of these movies is a collaboration of hundreds of filmmakers working together, and in the best versions people are contributing their creative ideas, and the people, the directors, and the producers are the ones that get to decide which of the things fit the road that you're going down."

Right now, with Into the Spider-Verse's success, Sony has started working on two more films for the Spider-Verse franchise, adding more weight to the requests to patent the animation mix.

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is currently screening in cinemas.
