Destin Daniel Cretton Explains Why Sadie Sink Deserved the Iconic Role
Having previously directed Sink in the 2017 biographical drama The Glass Castle, Cretton was already familiar with the young actor's dramatic range. While brainstorming on who could anchor the pivotal X-Men character within the MCU, Cretton noted that Sink was at the top of his list:
"Even before Jean Grey came up, the idea was that the reveal would be that she was just a young telepath," Cretton recalled in a new interview with Deadline, "At the time, we didn't fully know who we could use because we hadn't talked to Kevin [Feige] yet. We were going through different options, and Jean Grey was clearly a very good one."

As Cretton and the team were digging into different versions of Jean in the comics, they were seeking the Jean Grey who could empathize with Peter Parker, a version who would understand yet still be strong enough to be deemed a villain in her debut.
"When we started talking about the character of Jean Grey, and [Sadie Sink]'s name came up, it was just like, 'Oh, hell yeah.'" Cretton explained that as young as the age of 14, Sadie was a 'very smart, very dedicated actor with so much talent', and he knew she was going to 'kill this role, "I think her performance is so powerful and really makes this movie something special."
