Sphero Discontinues BB-8, R2-D2 Toys and Other Licensed Disney Products

Sphero

Sphero's BB-8, R2-D2, and other Disney-licensed robots are done. According to The Verge, Sphero is clearing out its remaining inventory of licensed toys, and it won't be restocking any more.

Sphero CEO Paul Berberian told The Verge that while the toys sold well soon after the related movie releases, interest for the product waned over time. Even though Sphero sold "millions" of BB-8s, the company data shows that the robots weren't used much after the initial play time and eventually collected dust on shelves.

"When you launch a toy, your first year's your biggest," Berberian explained. "Your second year's way smaller, and your third year gets really tiny."

Now, Sphero is more focused on developing more educational-focused robots like The Bolt.
