  • Quick Answer: Sony is rebooting its live-action Spider-Man spinoff universe with new actors and creators to "make the audience miss" the characters after recent critical failures.

The CEO of Sony Pictures recently confirmed that they are planning to do a reboot of the Spider-Man live-action spinoff universe franchise, following the abysmal reception of the movies.

With the critical and box office failure of Kraven the Hunter and the other installments in the franchise, fans have been wondering whether Sony will develop more movies featuring the Spider-Man villains and supporting characters, or if they will just focus on the animated Spider-Verse franchise instead. However, it looks like Sony is not giving up on the live-action universe yet.

In a recent interview with Matt Belloni's The Town podcast, Sony Pictures chairman and CEO Tom Rothman was asked whether they have plans to continue the live-action Spider-Man spinoff franchise.

After denying that the live-action universe is done, he was asked, "Are you going to go back to those at some point?"

Rothman replied, "Yes."

When asked whether it will be a "fresh reboot," Rothman responded again with, "Yes."

Belloni asked if the reboot of the franchise would involve "new people." The Sony chairman and CEO replied with, "Yes, yes," and added, "Scarcity has value. You've got to make the audience miss you."

So far, Rothman hasn't revealed more details regarding their plans for the reboot and whether it would focus on the same group of characters that they've introduced in the previous iteration of the franchise.

What's Next in Sony's Spider-Man Franchise?

Sony is currently working on Spider-Man: Brand New Day, in collaboration with Marvel Studios, and as part of the MCU franchise, just like the previous Tom Holland-led movies.

The upcoming movie will see Peter Parker trying to focus on college and leave Spider-Man behind. But when a new threat endangers his friends, he must break his promise and suit up again, teaming with an unexpected ally to protect those he loves.

The cast includes Holland, Zendaya (MJ), Jacob Batalon (Ned Leeds), Jon Bernthal (The Punisher), Mark Ruffalo (Bruce Banner/Hulk), Sadie Sink, Liza Colon-Zayas, Tramell Tillman, Michael Mando (Scorpion), and Marvin Jones III (Tombstone).

The film is slated for release in theaters on July 31. No trailer has been released yet at this point.
