Snoke’s Death in Star Wars: The Last Jedi Made J.J. Abrams Laugh

Star Wars fans were eager to learn more about Snoke in Lucasfilm's sequel trilogy. The Supreme Leader of the First Order had been teased to be more powerful and more vicious than Emperor Palpatine, however, the character was killed by his own apprentice in Star Wars: The Last Jedi before fans could learn more about the villain's true origin.

Though fans were upset by how easily Snoke was killed, Star Wars: The Force Awakens director J.J. Abrams admits that he was amused by the Supreme Leader's death in The Last Jedi.

Speaking in an interview with Rolling Stone to help promote his new Star Wars movie, The Rise of Skywalker, Abrams opens up about Rian Johnson's decision to kill Snoke in Episode VIII.

"When I read his first draft, it made me laugh," the director said, "I saw that was his take and his voice."

Though Snoke's death made him chuckle, Abrams appreciated many of the creative decisions that Johnson took in The Last Jedi.

"I appreciated the choices he made as a filmmaker that would probably be very different from the choices that I would have made," Abrams said.

This probably includes the decision to turn Rey (Daisy Ridley) into the daughter of a nobody. While some of the members of the Star Wars fanbase appreciate how The Last Jedi pushes the idea that anyone can be connected to the Force, some didn't really like the idea that Rey wasn't really the daughter of Luke (Mark Hamill), Obi-Wan (Ewan McGregor), or Han Solo (Harrison Ford). Some fans want Rey connected to a legacy character, and these fans are hoping that The Rise of Skywalker retcons the origin that The Last Jedi created for the heroine.

What kind of origin would you like Rey to have? Feel free to share your thoughts in the comment section below.

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker premieres December 20, 2019.
