Simu Liu Teases Shang-Chi’s Return

When Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings was released in 2021, it immediately found its way to the list of all-time favorite MCU movies of every Marvel fan. It’s one of the MCU projects that feature diversity and a satisfying storyline. Simu Liu, who made his MCU debut as the titular hero Shang-Chi, made fans fall in love with his charms at first sight. With that, the audience is anticipating his on-screen comeback, and the actor addressed the possibility of seeing him sooner rather than later teaming up with other Marvel characters.

Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania officially introduced Kang the Conqueror to the MCU. According to theories, Kang is the original owner of the mystical ten rings in Shang-Chi, which led fans to speculate if Kang will come for the rings in the upcoming Avengers: The Kang Dynasty. In an interview with People at the Academy of Motion Arts & Sciences Sci-Tech Awards last Friday, Liu expressed his admiration for other MCU actors and the characters they play and teased that fans might see his hero collaborating with them.

“I'm such a big fan of both the characters and the performers that play them, so any collaboration is an opportunity for me to work alongside someone who, in their way, is breaking barriers and at the very top of their game,” said Liu. “I think that's what excites me the most as a performer, [and] also as a fan.” He added, "And who knows, they might see something sooner than you think .... We'll see.”

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings grossed $432.2 million worldwide, surpassing its production budget of $150–200 million. Given that the film was released at the tail end of the COVID-19 pandemic and only had a 45-day window in theaters before its Disney+ release, its box office record was considered impressive. The film is one of the Marvel movies that are banned or never released in China.

In December 2021, a sequel was announced to be in development but never received a release date and is currently not listed as part of the MCU's Phase 5 or 6 slate. But others are assuming that the sequel is the untitled Marvel movie slated for release on November 7, 2025, between the release of Avengers: The Kang Dynasty and Avengers: Secret Wars.
