The hit historical drama series Shogun is set to return with a second season following its record-breaking debut season in early 2024. Fans have been looking forward to seeing what's next for Lord Toranaga's journey in feudal Japan.
Let's explore everything we know so far about the next season of the Emmy-winning FX series.
What is the Plot of Shogun Season 2?

The second season of Shogun will take place ten years after the events of the first season and continues the historically-inspired saga of these two men from different worlds whose fates are inextricably entwined.
The specific plot details are still under wraps, but it is expected to be an entirely original story since the first season already covered the entire novel by James Clavell. It is expected to consist of ten episodes, similar to the first season.
The first season follows Lord Yoshii Toranaga, who fought for his survival as his enemies in the Council of Regents united against him. When a mysterious European ship was found marooned in a nearby village, its English pilot, John Blackthorne, shared vital strategic secrets with Toranaga that tipped the scales of power in his favor to win a century-defining civil war.
FX recently confirmed that the second season will begin production in Vancouver in January. Justin Marks and Rachel Kondo are returning as showrunners, with the former also set to direct episodes.
For now, fans should wait for more news and updates regarding the second season in the coming months.
Who is Returning in Shogun Season 2? Who is Joining the Cast?
Hiroyuki Sanada and Cosmo Jarvis are reprising their respective roles of Lord Yoshii Toranaga and John Blackthorne from the first season. They will also serve as executive producers of the second season.
Also returning from the first season are Fumi Nikaidô as Ochiba, Shinnosuke Abe as Buntaro, Hiroto Kanai as Omi, Yoriko Dôguchi as Kiri, Tommy Bastow as Alvito, Yuko Miyamoto as Gin, Eita Okuno as Saeki, and Yuka Kouri as Kiku.
Joining the cast for the second season are Asami Kizukawa as Aya, Masataka Kubota as Hyūga, Sho Kaneta as Hidenobu, Takaaki Enoki as Lord Ito, and Jun Kunimura as Gōda.
Anna Sawai and Tadanobu Asano are not expected to return since their respective characters already died in the first season, but perhaps a flashback appearance might still be in play.
When is Shogun Season 2 Coming Out?
So far, FX and Hulu have not set a release window yet for the second season of Shogun. Considering production will not begin until early next year, it will likely premiere sometime in 2027 at the earliest.
While it might take a long time before fans will be able to watch the second season, at the very least, we have confirmation now that it will finally begin filming soon, and it's one step closer to becoming a reality.
