Tim Allen is set to make his sitcom return in the upcoming ABC series Shifting Gears. It marked his major TV comeback years after the end of his previous hit Last Man Standing.
Once again, he will be starring in a family-centric sitcom and he is teaming up with 2 Broke Girls star and MCU vet Kat Dennings, who will be playing his on-screen daughter.

What is ABC's Shifting Gears About?
Shifting Gears is a multi-cam sitcom that centers on Matt (Allen), a stubborn, widowed owner of a classic car restoration shop. When Matt’s estranged daughter (Dennings) and her kids move into his house, the real restoration begins.
"She just shows up on his doorstep with her two kids. She’s getting a divorce, and her life is falling apart. She has no money and she needs to stay with him. So it turns both their lives upside down," Dennings described her character.
Showrunner Michelle Nader explained, "It’s a very relatable story of a family trying to restore itself."
Despite the popularity of streaming, Nader hoped that the series "restore the classic form and modernize it a little bit" and added, "I think people are really ready for that reinvention."
Allen also executive produces the series alongside Nader, Marty Adelstein, Becky Clements, Richard Baker, Rick Messina, John Pasquin, Jim Patterson, Bob Daily, and John Amodeo. Dennings is also involved as a producer.
It is unknown yet how many episodes will the first season have, but it is expected to run throughout the spring season.
Who is Starring in Shifting Gears?
Aside from Allen and Dennings, the series' main cast also includes Seann William Scott, Daryl Mitchell, Maxwell Simkins, and Barrett Margolis.
It was announced a while ago that Jenna Elfman (Dharma & Greg) and Brenda Song (The Suite Life of Zack & Cody) will guest star during the first season with the former joining as a recurring player.
When is Shifting Gears Coming Out?
Shifting Gears is slated to premiere on ABC this Wednesday, January 8 at 8:00-8:30 p.m. EST.
Following its broadcast premiere every Wednesday night, it will also be available to stream on Hulu the next day.
