Scenes for Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker Were Rewritten Just Before Filming

It looks like there was a whole lot of editing on the script for Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.

Episode IX director and writer J.J. Abrams has been making the press rounds for The Rise of Skywalker together with his co-writer Chris Terrio and the two recently spoke in an interview with The New York Times to help promote the upcoming Star Wars film.

During the discussion with the publication, the Star Wars writing team opened up about their process, revealing that they were rewriting scenes continuously just before the scenes would shoot during production.

Though the process might sound strange and alarming to fans, Abrams says that he did the same thing on Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

"As we did on ‘Force Awakens,'" the director explained, "while we're shooting, we're reconsidering things, changing some significant story points going back to ideas that we had loved but put away. That process never stopped."

The director probably wanted to make a few tweaks to scenes when the actors and actresses would come in to film. Abrams just wants what's best for The Rise of Skywalker, so he's open to changing the script every now and then.

It sounds risky, but it also encourages creativity. We hope that the process helped elevate the narrative for The Rise of Skywalker because there's a lot riding on the film. Not only is Episode IX expected to close the curtain on Lucasfilm's Star Wars sequel trilogy, but it's also expected to culminate the entire Skywalker saga.

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker is set to premiere on December 20, 2019.
