Russell Brand Says He Was a Drug and Sex-Addicted ‘Imbecile,’ But Not a Rapist
Russell Brand has recently responded to the rape charges against him and admitted to his transgressions in his twenties.
In a video posted on his Instagram and X, he talked about being addicted to drugs. His heroin dependency cost him his career and social life, which eventually pushed him to go to rehab in 2003.
Brand, who was married to Katy Perry in 2010 but got divorced 14 months later, became the subject of speculation about being a sex addict after the split.
In his recent video, the Forgetting Sarah Marshall actor confessed to being one.
Nevertheless, despite being candid about his past mistakes, the comedian said he never “engaged in non-consensual activities.”
He also said in the video, "I pray that you can see that by looking in my eyes."On Friday, Russell Brand was charged with rape and sexual assault by British police for alleged incidents that took place between 1995 and 2005.
The four women who came forward said that one of the assaults occurred in Bournemouth and the other three in the Westminster area of central London.
According to London’s Metropolitan Police, Brand is charged with one count of rape, one count of indecent assault, one count of oral rape, and two counts of sexual assault.
The charges were filed in September 2023, 18 months after he was accused by the four women — allegations he vehemently denied at the time.
Russell Brand Baptized in Thames After Being Charged with Multiple Counts of Rape
Following the rape and assault accusations by four unnamed individuals, Russell Brand went to get baptized in the Thames in April 2024.
This was seven months after the controversy began. Although he denies all claims of sexual assault and maintains that any past relationships were purely consensual, he chose to awaken his faith by joining a Christian church.
The now-podcast host and influencer shared his experience on Instagram: “Something occurred in the process of baptism that was incredible, overwhelming,” Brand said. “I felt changed, transitioned.”
Brand compared the high he felt after being baptized to his past drug use, saying it gave him the same kind of mental peace.
In 2021, the former heroin addict celebrated a different kind of milestone. It marked his 19th year of sobriety.
“It is possible to live differently if you are a drug addict. It is possible to live differently if you are suffering. It is possible to live differently if you live in a twisted and broken culture,” Brand said in a video posted on X on December 13, 2021.
