Rupert Everett revealed that he won't be returning in Emily in Paris season 5 after allegedly being "fired" from the series.

The Golden Globe-nominated actor made his debut in the fourth season finale of the hit Netflix series as Italian fashion designer Giorgio Barbieri. With Emily deciding to stay in Rome, some fans were assuming that Everett's character would likely remain in the series and have an integral part in the fifth season. As it turns out, that will not be the case at all.

In an interview with Vanity Fair, Everett confirmed that he was not asked to return in Emily in Paris season 5, and he was devastated when he heard the news.

"For me, it was a tragedy. I was in bed for two weeks because I couldn’t get over it," he said.

Everett claimed that he was promised during the filming of the fourth season finale that he would be brought back in the fifth season. However, it ultimately did not happen, and the producers "fired" him.

"I did a scene in the latest season, and they told me, ‘Next year we’ll speak.' I waited for them to call me — but ultimately, it never came, and they just fired me," he revealed.

"Show business is always very difficult, from the beginning to the end. When they write the screenplay, they think they want you — but then things change, and they lose your character. I don’t know why."

However, sources close to the production reached out to Vanity Fair and clarified that Everett was only hired as a guest star in the series and his character has reached a "natural conclusion" in the story.

What to Expect in Emily in Paris Season 5

Season 5 of Emily in Paris is currently in production. Some scenes are also being filmed in Italy, as part of the storyline where Emily decided to stay in Rome.

"The cast and crew of Emily in Paris are thrilled to begin filming Season 5 in the Eternal City. From Parisian rooftops to Roman ruins, we can’t wait to share where Emily’s next chapter takes us," creator Darren Star said in the announcement to Tudum.

Star and executive producer Lily Collins also teased what fans should expect from her character as she moves to Rome during the fifth season.

"Marcello is a whole other adventure that we want for Emily because we ultimately want Emily to be able to have a better work/life balance. We want to have Emily be able to smile without condition. We want to see her beyond her vacay mode. And he comes at that perfect time," she said.

Collins also confirmed that Emily's relationship with Marcello will be largely explored in the fifth season. "I feel like they have a real spark and a real connection and a real romantic connection. A lot of that’s going to continue to play out next season," she teased.
