The long-gestating sequel to Romy and Michele's High School Reunion is officially moving forward, as filming has finally started.

For the last few years, there have been attempts to do another Romy and Michele movie, thirty years after the first film's release. Fans have been wondering whether it will still happen, given the delays in its development and the busy schedule of its main stars. Now, the news that we've been waiting for is finally here.

What to Expect in the Romy and Michele Sequel?

20th Century Studios recently announced that the sequel to Romy and Michele's High School Reunion has finally started filming. They also revealed that it will be released as a Hulu/Disney+ original movie, instead of a theatrical release.

Lisa Kudrow and Mira Sorvino will be reprising their iconic roles. A behind-the-scenes photo has also been released, showing the two stars in costume on set.

So far, the plot details are still under wraps, but Robin Schiff, who penned the original film, is also writing the sequel's screenplay. Tim Federle is directing.

Also returning from the original film are Janeane Garofalo (as Heather Mooney), Alan Cumming (Sandy Frink), Camryn Manheim (Toby Walters), and Julia Campbell (Christie Masters).

Joining the cast for the sequel are Keegan-Michael Key, Rob Huebel, Breckin Meyer, Patrick Warburton, and Nathan Lee Graham. The details regarding the roles that they are playing are still under wraps.

Last March, Kudrow addressed the development of the sequel, where she described the script as "hilarious," and she was hoping at that time that it would move forward.

"Where [the sequel] is, is — my fingers are crossed that they want to do [it], because I read a script that's hilarious... and I know everyone wants to do it," she said.

What is Romy and Michele's High School Reunion About?

Romy and Michele's High School Reunion follows two dim-witted, inseparable friends who hit the road for their ten-year high school reunion and concoct an elaborate lie about their lives to impress their classmates.

While it earned mixed-to-favorable reviews upon its release in 1997 and a modest $29.2 million against a $20 million budget, it has since grown into a beloved cult classic.

A prequel television film, Romy and Michele: In the Beginning, was released on ABC Family in 2005. Written and directed by Robin Schiff, it starred Katherine Heigl as Romy and Alexandra Breckenridge as Michele.

Years later, in 2022, original stars Lisa Kudrow and Mira Sorvino reprised their iconic characters to present at the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Awards.
