Deadline has confirmed that Prime Video is officially moving forward with the TV series adaptation of RoboCop, after giving the project the green light.

Just like the original, the TV version will center on a giant tech conglomerate that convinces the city to deploy a powerful robot in its police force – one implanted with the consciousness of a beloved, fallen officer.

Peter Ocko (Lodge 49) will serve as the showrunner of the series, while Jason Wan is involved as one of the executive producers.

So far, no casting decision has been made yet for the series, but we will likely hear the details on who will play the titular character in the coming months, now that the project is moving forward.

"I’ve been a massive fan of Robocop forever, so getting to help bring this world to television is a dream. What Paul Verhoeven created in 1987 was decades ahead of its time, and its questions about technology, identity, and who corporations really serve have only grown more urgent," Wan said in the announcement.

"With Peter’s distinctive vision and bold approach to storytelling, and alongside Ed [Neumeier, the original writer], and our partners at Amazon MGM Studios, we’re working to honor what made the original iconic and highlight its relevancy in this modern, tech-driven world, while building something unmistakably new for a global audience."

The History of the RoboCop Franchise

Rooted in the dystopian realm of American cyberpunk action, the RoboCop franchise centers on the tragic yet heroic fate of Alex Murphy. A dedicated Detroit police officer brutally gunned down in the line of duty, Murphy is forcibly resurrected by Omni Consumer Products (OCP), a ruthless mega-corporation looking to privatize law enforcement.

Cybernetically enhanced into an unstoppable law enforcement unit brand-named RoboCop, Murphy finds himself locked in a dual struggle: waging war against the violent crime crippling a decaying city, while wrestling with his own lost humanity and the blatant corruption lurking inside OCP’s corporate boardrooms.

The franchise officially launched in 1987 with Paul Verhoeven’s critically acclaimed film RoboCop, hailed as a masterpiece of satire, action, and social critique. Its massive cultural impact quickly spawned a cinematic trilogy, continuing with RoboCop 2 in 1990 and RoboCop 3 in 1993. Over the decades, the silver-clad law enforcer transcended movie theaters, expanding into a broad multimedia empire that includes live-action and animated television series, video games, and extensive comic book storylines.

Accumulating well over $100 million in worldwide box office revenue, the franchise cemented its status as an enduring pop-culture staple. It was later reintroduced to a new generation with the 2014 reboot, which modernized its core themes of corporate greed, media influence, and human identity for contemporary audiences.
