Rian Johnson recently revealed the plans that he had for his canceled Star Wars trilogy.
A few years ago, the director was attached to helm a new original Star Wars trilogy following his involvement in The Last Jedi. However, the project was quietly canceled as Johnson decided to focus on other works instead. Since then, fans have been wondering what his vision was going to be about.
What Was Rian Johnson's Idea for the Canceled Star Wars Trilogy?
In an interview with Rolling Stone, Johnson revealed that there was no major progress on his Star Wars trilogy when he was working on the project, and it did not move forward as he opted to focus on Knives Out.
"Nothing really happened with it. We had a great time working together, and they said, ‘Let’s keep doing it.’ I said, ‘Great!’ I would kick ideas around with Kathy [Kennedy]," he said.
"The short version is Knives Out happened. I went off and made Knives Out, and was off to the races, busy making murder mysteries. It’s the sort of thing if, down the line, there’s an opportunity to do it, or do something else in Star Wars, I would be thrilled. But right now I’m just doing my own stuff, and pretty happy."
Johnson also added that the trilogy was "all very conceptual" and there was no "outline or a treatment or anything" developed for the project.
No filmmaker was hired to take over the project after Johnson decided to commit to the Knives Out franchise instead.
Is Rian Johnson Still Open to Return in Star Wars?
While Johnson has moved on to other projects, he is still open to the idea of working in the Star Wars franchise again.
In a 2022 interview, he shared that he "would be sad" if he didn't direct another Star Wars movie again, but it "wouldn’t be the end of the world for anyone."
"But I would be sad. I love the world. I love the people. I love Star Wars fans. I love the passion of how they engage in it," the director said.
"There’s nothing like telling a story in this world and then experiencing people truly connecting to it and letting you know that. It’s extraordinary."
Johnson is currently working on the upcoming film Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery, which will release later this year.
