A new report revealed why Denzel Washington left the Cannes Film Festival early, and the reason is not what you may think.

The Oscar-winning actor made headlines during his brief visit to the festival due to his tense exchange with a photographer on the red carpet. He was also surprisingly awarded the Honorary Palme d'Or.

Here's Why Denzel Washington Left Cannes Film Festival Early

Fans have speculated that Washington's decision to leave the Cannes Film Festival early had a connection to his confrontation with the photographer.

However, TMZ reported that his brief stay at the festival had nothing to do with the photographer controversy. It was part of the plan all along.

Washington only had one day off to attend the Cannes Film Festival. He is currently starring in a new Broadway production of Othello in New York City alongside Jake Gyllenhaal.

He flew back to New York after attending the screening of Highest 2 Lowest at the festival. He did not attend the press conference that took place the day after.

So far, Washington has not released any statement regarding his viral confrontation with the photographer.

Denzel Washington Receives Surprise Honorary Palme d'Or

During the world premiere screening of Highes 2 Lowest at the festival, Washington was awarded the Honorary Palme d'Or.

The award came as a surprise for him as he wasn't informed prior that he would be awarded the prestigious award. He was emotional when he accepted the trophy on stage.

"This is a total surprise for me, so I’m emotional. It’s a great opportunity to collaborate with my brother once again, brother from another mother, and to be here once again in Cannes," Washington said in his acceptance speech.

"We’re a very privileged group in this room that we get to make movies and wear tuxedos and nice clothes and dress up and get paid for it as well. We’re just blessed beyond measure. I’m blessed beyond measure. From the bottom of my heart, I thank you all."
