Michelle Obama recently got candid about her viral moment on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, where she participated in a push-up challenge.
The former First Lady of the United States went viral in 2012 when she did 25 push-ups on the hit talk show while she was serving in the position. However, looking back at it today, Obama has a different take on that moment.
Michelle Obama Reflects on Her Viral Push-up Moment on The Ellen Show
In a recent interview on Amy Poehler's Good Hang podcast, Obama reflected on aging and the physical difficulties she is enduring.
"I'm at the age where I'll wake up and my shoulder's sore," she said.
Poehler responded, "Don't get me started. I had frozen shoulder a couple of years ago. And guess what? Nobody knows what causes it, and there's nothing you can do about it, like every ailment for women in their fifties."
When Poehler asked the former First Lady whether she could still do push-ups, Obama recalled her viral moment on The Ellen DeGeneres Show.
"Now I do them on my knees. This is another thing. I don't need to do regular push-ups. I have nothing to prove. I can, but it's hard," she said.
"My arm length doesn't go all the way down. You know who pointed that out was Ellen, because in my first term, she challenged me to a push-up competition."
Obama added, "I'm the first lady, you know. And she heard that I worked out. So I'm on her show doing push-ups, and I did more push-ups than her, but she still says I didn't go down all the way. Anatomically, I don't think I can. My arms are very long, and she's a much smaller person than me."
Michelle Obama's Viral Push-up Explained
In a February 2012 episode of The Ellen DeGeneres Show, DeGeneres challenged Obama to do push-ups, to which the then-First Lady complied.
"I can do some," Obama said.
The host responded, "I was just wondering if you could do more push-ups than I could do."
Obama roasted DeGeneres as she said, "You know, it depends on how your back is. I know you've got these back issues."
Both of them did the push-up challenge together, with Obama ended up doing 25 by the end. The audience reacted with roaring applause.
