Prince William and Prince Harry received different treatment growing up. The former was always favored over the latter because he is the heir. A former royal aide spoke about how their rivalry may have started at the breakfast table.
Prince William Fed More Than Prince Harry?
Paul Burrell, 64, Princess Diana's former butler, recounted how the dynamic between King Charles and the late Princess of Wales was when they were growing up. According to The Sun, the Duke of Sussex was made to feel less important than his big brother as a child by getting fewer sausages.
"How come he gets three?" Prince Harry would reportedly miffed, according to Burrell.
"William needs filling up more than you. He’s going to be king one day."
Recalling the incident, Burrell said he could see how the sibling rivalry started and played out at times.
"When I look back now, I think maybe I was glimpsing the dynamic at play," he told the outlet. "One time I saw the nanny give William three sausages at breakfast and Harry had two. And Harry would look at his plate and say, how come he gets three? And I only get two."
"Harry would fall quiet and suck it up, but that’s what he had to contend with, even in his own home."
Prince William And Prince Harry Are Equal In Princess Diana's Eyes
According to Burrell, in Princess Diana's eyes, the royal siblings were "absolutely equal." She doted on them both.
However, he could see Prince Harry struggling with the standards set by his big brother.
Prince Harry Reportedly Wanted To Beat His Brother
Burrell compared the two princes, and according to him, the future king is smarter than the spare. When King Charles reportedly decided to send Prince Harry to Eton, Princess Diana begged him not to do so for fear that Prince Harry "would have a tough time at the school in his brother's shadow." However, his plea fell on deaf ears.
"He went to Eton and suffered the indignity of being constantly compared to William," Burrell said.
"William was brighter than Harry and would be king one day, how can you compete with that?"
Between the two, Prince William was measured and stoic, while his younger brother had to be the clown to be noticed. Burrell said there was a time when Princess Diana would shout across the room to quiet Prince Harry because "he needs to pipe down."
Several royal experts spoke about the royal princes in a documentary. According to Emily Andrews, royal corresponded of The Sun, Prince William and Prince Harry were both competitive. There were lots of footage of them playing football and shoving each other or rugby, and they rugby tackle each other to the ground.
She also remembered Prince Harry, Kate Middleton and Prince William's 100-meter race. She said the Duke of Sussex wanted to win and didn't even consider his sister-in-law because "he just wanted to beat his brother."
Burrell echoed his sentiment in the same documentary saying Prince Harry "has always been driven because he wanted to beat his brother because his brother seemed to have all the goals, he had all the accolades, and so Harry dug his feet in and wanted to be as good as his brother."
