Prince Charles and Princess Diana had a fairytale-like royal wedding, but they didn't have a happy ending together. Their marriage ended in divorce because there was no romance even during their courtship, according to a report.
Prince Charles Made Princess Diana Laughed With Unromantic Proposal
Princess Diana was only 20 years old when she was invited to Windsor Castle for a visit that would change her life. She arrived and Prince Ch arles told her that he had "missed her so much." The Prince of Wales led her to the nursery to pop the big question.
Prince Charles was over a decade older than Princess Diana and had only met her 12 times. However, before she left the castle at the time, she was already engaged to the heir apparent.
Majesty magazine editor Ingrid Seward said on Channel 5 documentary Charles and Di: The Truth Behind Their Wedding that Prince Charles' proposal was not romantic. He chose the nursery in Windsor Castle "because the nursery is like a home." Princess Diana allegedly "burst out laughing" in response to the future king's question about them getting married.
"I think that was probably just her nerves," Seward was quoted by Mirror as saying. "She didn't think it was the most romantic of proposals, but she had the proposal."
"She was completely bowled over by this, didn't see it coming," royal biographer Christopher Wilson added. "Prince Charles didn't pick her up in his arms and embrace or do any of the things we might do when we propose marriage to the one that we love."
According to Wilson, Prince Charles called the Queen and informed Her Majesty, "there, I've done it now. You've asked me to get married to somebody and I've fixed it." Apparently, he just looked for a wife.
Prince Charles And Princess Diana's Marriage Was Like A Business Transaction
Royal expert Elizabeth Holmes, author of "HRH: So Many Thoughts on Royal Style," spoke with Us Weekly about the Prince and Princess of Wales' relationship and marriage last year ahead of CNN's docuseries Diana. According to her, the couple's union was "almost like a business transaction" and it wasn't romantic at all.
"Diana just checked so many boxes and sort of slotted right in, and was clearly very eager and willing and wanting to please," Holmes explained.

Princess Diana was misguided and she was too young. Meanwhile, Prince Charles was doing it to satisfy the Queen who wanted him to find a suitable wife because he was already 32 at the time.
"She’s making this huge life decision without stable family behind her [and] much guidance," Holmes continued. "Looking back in hindsight, it’s very easy to find all the red flags. … It was like, 'We’re marching forth. We’re doing our duty.'"
