- Quick Answer: Prime Video is recasting Kratos after Ryan Hurst tore his bicep performing a stunt, forcing a production pause and complete reshoots of four episodes.
Sony Pictures Television and Amazon MGM Studios have been forced to recast Ryan Hurst following a serious on-set injury during the production of God of War in late June, an incident that could significantly delay the series.
After Hurst was announced as the lead in the live-action adaptation of the iconic PlayStation game, production officially began in February 2026. However, filming was ultimately brought to a halt following the on-set accident.
What Happened to Ryan Hurst on the Set of God of War?

According to TMZ, Ryan Hurst tore his bicep while performing a stunt for God of War.
While the exact stunt has not been disclosed and details surrounding the injury remain limited, Hurst reportedly requires surgery, forcing production to pause for an undetermined period.
Reports claim the production was planning to resume preparations in mid-August before cameras rolled again in mid-October. However, a torn bicep typically requires four to six months of recovery, with full strength often taking up to a year to return.
Given the physically demanding nature of Kratos, the rage-fueled Spartan warrior, it may not be safe for Hurst to return to filming until sometime in 2027.
Deadline reported the lengthy recovery forced the production to make the difficult decision to recast the role. Since God of War has already been ordered for two seasons that are scheduled to film back-to-back, waiting for Hurst was reportedly no longer a viable option.
As a result, the four episodes that had reportedly been completed before the accident will be reshot with the new actor cast as Kratos.
The production also faces another challenge with co-lead Atreus, played by child actor Callum Vinson. Because the series is expected to resume filming months later, it would be difficult to reuse much of the existing footage as Vinson could noticeably age between shoots.
As for Hurst, the recasting news comes as he begins an extensive recovery after undergoing a major physical transformation for the role. The actor gained 40 pounds of muscle and spent months training and performing the physically demanding role before ultimately suffering the on-set injury.
Who Could Replace Ryan Hurst in God of War?

So far, it remains unclear who will replace Ryan Hurst as Kratos in God of War. However, film and TV insider John Campea previously shared his picks for actors who could step into the role of the legendary Spartan warrior.
One of his top choices is Joe Manganiello, who has long been a fan-favorite casting for Kratos thanks to his imposing physique, deep voice, and proven acting ability.
His portrayal of Slade Wilson/Deathstroke in Justice League and experience in fantasy projects suggest he has the presence needed to bring the Ghost of Sparta to life.
Another strong candidate is Jason Momoa. The actor has already headlined several major action-fantasy franchises, including Aquaman, Game of Thrones, and Dune.
His commanding screen presence, warrior-like charisma, and experience playing larger-than-life characters make him a natural fit for the brutal world of God of War.
Travis Fimmel is also among the names mentioned. Best known for playing Ragnar Lothbrok in Vikings, Fimmel has already proved he can portray a layered Norse warrior.
His familiarity with Norse mythology and ability to balance fierce combat with emotional depth could make his transition to the role of Kratos feel seamless.
Until Sony and Amazon make an official announcement, however, it remains to be seen who will ultimately take over the role of Kratos in Prime Video's God of War.
