Park Hae Soo Reflects on Popularity, Awards Shows Win After Squid Game's Success

Park Hae Soo has an over-a-decade of career, but he finally enjoyed his success even more after Squid Game aired.

The South Korean actor launched his career through the 2007 musical, Mister Lobby. His musical theatre stint did not stop there as he went on to star in Angel Called Desire and Annapurna.

Since then, Park Hae Soo continuously landed roles in different series and film, including The Pirates, By Quantum Physics: A Nightlife Venture, Time to Hunt, God of War, Six Flying Dragons, The Legend of the Blue Sea, and Chimera.

Although he is also best known for his role in the series, Prison Playbook, he became more popular because of the Netflix thriller series that has since garnered awards from international organizations.

Park Hae Soo Celebrates Squid Game’s Success

In a new exclusive interview with The Korea Times’ Kwak Yeon Soo, Park Hae Soo commented on the chances he got to attend several international awards ceremonies after starring in Squid Game. For what it’s worth, the actor made appearances in Golden Globes and Screen Actors Guild Awards.

Park Hae Soo noted that the experience was extraordinary. He also sent his gratitude after getting the chance to show original Korean content worldwide. With the sudden popularity of Korean cultural content, the actor explained how the countries’ series and films can instantly change people’s preferences.

"I think international audiences are impressed by the original plots and screenplays of Korean cultural content. They also respond to how stories depict the reality of human condition. In the past, major Hollywood studios would say they are looking for Asian actors. But now, they specifically want Korean actors," he said.

In Squid Game, he played the role of Cho Sang Woo, a former head of the investment team at a securities company and Seong Gi Hun’s junior classmate. His character is wanted after stealing money from his clients and having debts from loan sharks.

Park Hae Soo Has New Movie!

After Squid Game, Park Hae Soo scored more roles in the TV and film industries. One of which is his new movie, Yaksha.

The spy action film, which secured the No. 3 spot on the Netflix movie chart, tells the story of Ji Hoon (Park Hae Soo). He is a National Intelligence Service prosecutor who is tasked to inspect the Shenyang branch in China and the overseas black operation team leader, Kang In.

Park Hae Soo did a lot of action scenes, including fights and chases, and he reportedly liked those sequences.

"I personally prefer taking a physical approach to acting. When I prepare for a role, the first thing I do is to explore the character's walking style or capture every little action of his," he said.

For now, he reportedly does not have plans to become part of a project overseas yet.
